Solitude
Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone.
For the sad old earth must borrow it’s mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer;
Sigh, it is lost on the air.
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
But shrink from voicing care.
Rejoice, and men will seek you;

They want full measure of all your pleasure,
But they do not need your woe.
Be glad, and your friends are many;
Be sad, and you lose them all.
There are none to decline your nectared wine,
But alone you must drink life’s gall.

내가 인상깊게 봤던 영화 “올드보이”
극중 최민식이 갇혀있던 좁은 방의 벽 한 켠에는 섬뜩한 그림과 함께 “웃어라, 온 세상이 웃을 것이다. 울어라, 너 혼자만 울 것이다.”라는 인상적인 문구가 적혀있다.
영화를 볼 때에도 머릿속에 강렬한 인상을 남기더니 영화를 본 지 어느덧 몇 년의 세월이 지난 지금에 와서 갑자기 내 입 속에서 되살아나고 말았다.
그 당시에는 몰랐었는데, 이게 어느 미국 여류 시인의 시에서 인용된 구절이었더라.
‘Ella Wheeler Wilcox’이라는 이름을 가진 시인인데, 시 제목인 ‘Solitude’는 ‘고독’으로 쉽게 번역되지만
그 속에는 ‘혼자 있어서 외롭다’의미 뿐만 아니라 ‘혼자 있어서 자유롭다’라는 뜻도 함의되어 있다나..
곱씹을수록 구절구절 단어 하나하나가 머리를 때리는 시다.
